When I die (unfinished)
Dedicated to Kevin Colaner. RIP dear friend and mentor
5/7/2020 Please cry
Or sigh
Or laugh
Or rage
Or sit
Or run
When I die
Please rock back on your heels, feel the ground; hard, unyielding, let it hold you now as I can never again
Please keep your stride or let it quicken or draw still
Please feel the ground; let it rise up to meet you now that your body has become a strange vessel that can’t contain your spirit for a moment that feels like a lifetime
Please feel the beating of your heart, though it feels foreign, let it be reminder that it knocks to signify that you still have breath, you have life yet inside of you
When I die
Let your mind race with the first, the last, the mundane and the maddening memories of me
Let your mind wander with thoughts, no matter how strange; ponderings that fill the place you’ve set for me at the table in your heart
Let those thoughts flit from regret to despair, melancholy, invite these sensations no matter their names as they form the last bonds, with finality, to you, in this moment now a memory.
When I die
Hold yourself
Hold your breath
Hold the tears
Hold the blood coursing through you,
Hold the markers of your life that you still live as you hold me, now a memory
When I die
Live for me
Embrace the release of my life, follow me into a realm with a chasm so deep, so final between us
Embrace the beginning marked by the end of my physical presence
When I die, follow that end to the new beginning, whatever it is, wherever it leads you.
When I die, know that I am with you still
Look at me through you and let go
